FAIR data handling with CS3MESH4EOSC

Taking the pain out of compliance

If you know you will be gathering scientific data, you're likely also looking to store and share your data on a fit-to-task repository. But what about all the metadata you'll be compiling - and how can you plan to ensure necessary compliance with FAIR principles?

Choosing the right service and support

First and foremost, you will have to set a relevant target for your endeavors. Which repository, metadata catalog and support channels should you rely upon?

The proposal of the CS3MESH4EOSC project is to connect existing large-scale European data services and build FAIR-compliance right into these services.

In other words, users of a data service that is part of the CS3MESH4EOSC family, will have FAIR-compliance for their data - at the service they're already using and relying on for their daily work.

Concretely, your data service will gain features relevant for research data - metadata, archival, publishing, persistent identifier support - and much more.

You will be joining us on a journey to provide FAIR support to all academic researchers - easy and well-governed sharing of scientific data in an architecture crossing organizational and national boundaries.

The CS3MESH4EOSC data services and the functionality we build on top of them are designed for compliance with relevant international initiatives such as:

  1. EOSC, the European Open Science Cloud
  2. FAIR, Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable
  3. CTS, CoreTrustSeal

Aiming for general compliance or full certification,

the next steps may include:

  1. Compiling a data management plan
  2. Deciding whether to make use of a data steward
  3. Deciding whether to aim for general compliance to FAIR principles or aim for certified compliance.

A full certification by CTS entails thorough planning and analysis on the 16 specific requirements below:

Mission Organizational infrastructure Documented storage procedures Data Discovery
Licenses Expert guidance Preservation plan Data re-use
Continuity of Access Data Integrity Data quality Technology
Ethics Appraisal Workflows Security

The requirements of your research grant, your wallet or your time will probably guide you in this decision. If not, you are welcome to contact me for further information.
