Xavier Espinal
Xavier obtained his PhD in Physics in Barcelona (IFAE) within the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment in Japan. In 2005, he joined the Spanish Tier-1 center for LHC computing (PIC) and the ATLAS experiment collaboration, where he started his career in Scientific Computing. Xavier held several roles in distributed operations, data processing and data management activities during the deployment and early operation phase of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. In 2012 he joined CERN as staff member, where he was the Service Manager of the CERN Large Scale Storage Services (>100PB of disk and >300PB of tape storage at the time), during this time he also was the CERN-IT liaison with the fixed-target and neutrino experiments at CERN.
Xavier is currently leading the CERN-IT Engagement for the Research and Computing Sector. He actively participates in R&D activities and projects to address upcoming challenges in Exa-scale Distributed Computing and Open Science in diverse scientific disciplines. Xavier is leading the Data Management and Access activity of the European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle Physics (ESCAPE) and is a member of the NuPECC (The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee) Long Range Plan 2024 for Open Science and Data.
